Why use the KISSS Ebb & Flow Mat system?

  • The Ebb & Flow Mat system can substantially reduce water consumption, run off & labour costs. (Minimum of 60% water savings against overhead systems).
  • It will work on beds from 0% up to 6% slope. (1-2% is ideal)
  • Spreads water evenly as needed by plants.
  • Reduces fertiliser costs.
  • Reduces the incidence of weeds & diseases.
  • Catches rain & excess water for collection to your storage tank or dam.
  • Standard pots and a variety of mixes can be used.

The Ebb & Flow Mat system is surprisingly simple. It comprises a three-layer system with built-in drip irrigation pipe down both sides (and also in the middle for mats larger than 5'6").

The difference between the Ebb & Flow Mat system and other closed systems, like capillary mats, is that the Ebb & Flow Mat system drains all the excess water away just like an ebb and flow bench.

Pots sitting on the Ebb & Flow Mat system take up water by media contact between the pot and the ring of water, followed by rapid drainage. This form of irrigation allows fine control of water flow and drainage, and produces an even water uptake.

The Ebb & Flow Mat system wetting and drying cycle assists aeration and thus healthy growth. It also assists by hardening plants and making them more ready to market.

It can be used on sloping or level ground and on top of existing plant production beds (if they are free of sharp objects). It is suitable for use with a range of pots and potting mixes.

Plants should be well watered overhead at initial installation to settle them in and to start the initial capillary action. They will not normally need further overhead watering.

The mat is available in 11 convenient sizes: 0.30m, 0.60m, 1.06m, 1.2m, 1.37m, 1.5m, 1.67m, 1.8m, 2m, 2.13m, 2.6m (1', 2', 3'6", 4', 4'6", 5', 5'6", 6', 6'6", 7' and 8'6")
